Note on Safari:- A safari park is an attraction in zoo where visitors can ride in vehicles provided by the zoo to observe freely roaming animals. The main attractions are large animals. They have been aptly described as Topsy – Turvy zoos or Zoo in Reverse.

The main idea in such parks is to keep animals in large enclosures in their near natural habitat giving maximum freedom possible. People see them from custom made vehicles which are taken inside the enclosure

Nehru zoological park, Hyderabad :- The lion safari park in the Nehru Zoological park, Hyderabad is the first one of its kind in India and in South –east Asia . It was opened to public on 17th March 1974 by Dr.Sarojini Mahishi , Honble Minister for State for Tourism and Civil Aviation in the distinguished presence of Shri. Jalagam Vengal Rao, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. Later it has been developed into a complex of four Safaris i.e., Lion Safari and Tiger Safari in the later years.

An important aspect of the Safari park is the display of Indian fauna threatened with extinction. Apart from creating awareness among people regarding importance of these animals, these facilities provide excellent scope for them to roam freely and proliferate. These include the pure Asiatic lions from the Gir forest in Gujarat where about 400 are believed to be left. It is hoped that these threatened animals will breed and form a nucleus for their eventual return to nature for re-stocking in forests which form their natural habitat. This helps to achieve our goals of Ex-Situ conservation.

The park provides an exciting experience for people who like to see wild animals moving about in an unfettered freedom. For tourists the safari park is a tremendous attraction and unique experience. They will be able to take photographs of our unique fauna in a natural setting which ease and in comfort.

The safari park at present has 100 acres of undulating topography located in the western portion of the Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad.

Inside the safari park a natural and varied set up is provided for the Asiatic lions, royal Bengal tigers, and sloth bears. On one side there are rocky outcrops and boulders, in the middle a dry savannah type of forest and on the other side thick forests with marshes, streams etc. People are taken inside this area in a mini bus, which has reinforced glass and barred windows. The bus enters into the safari park through specially designed gates. Inside the park roads are laid out so that the bus covers almost all types of habitat where the lions, tigers and bears are likely to found.

The roads are winding ones so that spectators have the thrilling surprise of going around some bushes and coming face to face with a pride of lions etc. They may stop on the way to watch lions playing in a pool in the marsh amidst sylvan settings. Slights which may be seen rarely even in the wild.
Visitors are taken in the newly acquired CNG mini buses only. A charge or Rs. 40/- for adult and Rs. 20/- for child is made. The visit lasts for about 30 minutes. The safari park will be opened on all days including public holidays, except on MONDAY. The park timings are 10.00 AM to 5.00 PM.
